We've had some much needed rain lately, but we were lucky on that afternoon to get a break in the dreary weather so that we could shoot outside. It's a good thing too because Bo's humans have a gorgeous yard! The pretty Fall colors look amazing with Bo's fur.

Simba - Houston Pet Photography

During my recent weekends in Houston, I took some more photos of my sister's cat, Simba. He's about the same age as my own cat, and Laura got him around the time I got Spree. Unfortunately, Simba's kidneys aren't doing so well and my sister is watching him like a hawk to keep an eye out for any signs of distress. No pet owner wants their fur baby to suffer. I figured the best way I could be of some support was to take some more photos of Simba. I like to think my photography has improved since the first set I took of him, and I know Laura appreciates these photos a lot.

These Are The Days

My sister, Laura, is getting married next week. As the final countdown begins, I've been doing a lot of reminiscing about our younger years and all the things we went through together.

As if the experience of moving from Norway to the United States in elementary school wasn't traumatic enough, one day I came home from high school to the realization that my younger sister suddenly wasn't so small any more. She was now taller than me! My parents did always warn me not to pick on her because one day she would be bigger than me.

Nostalgia aside, Kylie (Maid of Honor) and I (Matron of Honor) thought we would take the Bride to Be out for a night on the town and stay at a swanky Houston hotel. No girls night would be complete without some fun photos. I brought along feather boas, jewelry, and had the girls bring their Little Black Dresses. Laura and Kylie actually made my life very easy with regards to telling them how to pose. I'd give them my general idea and they would run with it. The result was gorgeous as you'll see below.

Kylie took this last one and I am forever grateful. It totally says "Sister, I love you bunches!" We're also laughing because I was on my tiptoes and Laura was squatting down a bit. That girl has 4 inches on me. ;-)

Albums

One of my favorite things to do once a client has had a chance to look through their proofs is designing their album. It's fun, creative, and has so many possibilities. I thought I would show a few examples of some albums I have made, as it often helps to see things rather than just read about or listen to a description.

From top to bottom, the photo above shows a 3x3 accordion album, an 8x8 album with a fabric cover, two 5x5 albums with custom-designed photo covers, and finally an accordion album all folded up and with a custom-designed photo cover. These are only some of the options you can choose from. :-)

Above is an album I recently made for my mother-in-law. It's a 5x5 album with a custom designed photo cover. On the inside, the pages are hinged so that they lay flat and they have a UV coating on them to help preserve and protect them. This photo also shows the other side of the accordion album. Those albums are great because you can pick up to 10 photos and they are small enough to carry around in a purse. They also have magnets in the covers to keep them closed.

Pharaoh - Austin Pet Photography

Pharaoh is a mutt. With his wiry fur and Fu Manchu beard, he's got a look to match his guard dog personality. I wasn't sure I was going to be able to take photos of Pharaoh as he can take his guarding duties very seriously. Fortunately for us, he was in a happy mood and content to hang out on the porch with us humans, in spite of the unrelenting Texas heat. Pharaoh's eyes are the the neatest things I have ever seen. It really sets him apart. Check him out!

Chaos - Austin Pet Photography

My husband and I spent a recent busy weekend in Austin, TX visiting several friends. Among the socializing was a quick photo shoot for the next two fur babies I will blog about.

Miss Chaos will have her own blog post because she is a cat, and that's really all the explanation I will give on that. ;-) Chaos's human is my friend Candace, whom we have known for well over a decade. And of course we've known Chaos that long too. She's a Manx kitty, which means she has no tail. When I first met Chaos, I was incredibly fascinated by this fact as I had never seen a tailless cat!

Anyway, on with a few photos.

Jo Totes and Other Things

I thought I would dust this blog off a bit as I've been sorely lacking in updates, whether it is pet photography-related or not! Like many people with a photography business, I wrestle with the idea of expanding what I blog about, but without boring everyone with the daily minutia of my life. So I figured I could jump start this idea by writing about a lovely recent purchase.

Like a typical gal, I love accessories! Jewelry, makeup, purses, etc. After several social photography outings, I realized I wanted something a little less, "Hey, I'm carrying an expensive camera!" and a little more, "Wow, cute purse! Oh it's a camera bag?" There were quite a few options out there to choose from but when I stumbled upon Jo Totes, I fell in love.

Initially, I was drawn to the vintage-style Rose purse, but went with the Millie because it was smaller. And because my sister said she liked the Millie better, and she's the bees knees when it comes to style choices. Anyway, I ordered the Millie in Sugarplum because it looked to die for online. I wasn't disappointed! It is truly gorgeous and the faux leather exterior is really soft. I love that there are adjustable pads inside so you can easily fit things.

I am looking forward to next month when my husband and I take a trip to Florida for our friends' wedding, and I can take my Millie! Except now the world will know that there really is a camera inside. Hmmm...maybe I should use Millie as an actual purse to keep people guessing. Haha! No camera in here today!!

Frankie & Sweets - Frisco Pet Photography

When my friends, Nick & Heloise, go out of town, I get to pet sit for them. For my first stint of pet sitting last year, Frankie the cat remained under the bed and all I would see were his gold/green eyes peering out at me.

The second time, earlier this year, he finally came out for some scruffles, and all I saw was Sweets's golden eyes peering at me from under the bed. (Sweets is a foster cat and super shy.)

The third most recent stint, both cats came out from under the bed for some scruffles and love. It took Sweets a few days before she would come out, but when she saw I wasn't that scary and just wanted to love on her, she came out to say hello. (She is very likely a permanent addition to Nick & Heloise's family. :-)

I almost ruined all that by bringing my camera. Both cats were immediately suspicious. But I was patient and let their curiosity get the better of them. On the second day that I brought my camera, I was able to get some great shots of Sweets, who has an inner supermodel. I love pet sitting because I get unlimited time to photograph the pets! It was so chill and so much fun!

Strider - Plano Pet Photography

On a sunny day in March, I met up with Strider and his human mom, Kris, for a wild afternoon of photos. And I do mean wild! Six year old Strider is a happy, energetic, and crazy fun dog. He kept us on our toes the entire time. He was fresh from the groomers and looked super handsome for his time in the photo spotlight!

The photos were a birthday surprise for Kris's husband, so I maintained radio silence on the blog until after the big day so as to not ruin it!

Thanks Kris and Strider! I hope the surprise went well! I can't wait to hear about it! :-)

Reno - Plano Pet Photography

Another shoot done on one of those warm days right before Christmas. Meet 4 month old Reno and his human, Doug.

It was a gorgeous sunny afternoon with just a bit of wind, but it didn't stop us from having a really fun time. Reno has endless puppy energy and I spent just as much time photographing him as I did laughing at him. What a goofball!

We hung out at Plano's Oak Point Park, which has really great trails and wide open spaces.

Happy (almost) New Year!! I hope your holiday season has treated you well. I have had a great time with friends and family over the past few weeks & soon it will be back to the usual routine!

Remember those couple of days right before Christmas that were really warm? Well, I got lucky to shoot some photos on those days.

The first session was with Father John and his dog, Browning. We hung out in their back yard and had a really fun time. You can totally tell these two adore each other!

Holiday Cards and Photoshoots

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Well, not quite yet...but soon!!

I was trying out an email marketing program yesterday, (Thank you Mad Mimi!) and I sent out a fun product idea. Holiday greeting cards, starring your pet! Clients can choose a favorite photo from their past photo session, and I will custom-design 5x7 Christmas/holiday cards!

New clients: book a photo session with me ASAP so you have enough time to review your proofs and select a photo for your greeting cards.

I also am offering mini-photo sessions for those on a tight budget, but who still want some pet photography fun, and of course some holiday greeting cards! Contact me for details!

Franklin - Dallas Pet Photography

Franklin...what a cutie! He's less than a year old and still has that kitten energy. And there's just something about cats with gorgeous blue eyes. Franklin and his humans had a lovely afternoon playing chase the Red Dot (aka laser pointer), plus there were plenty of scruffles and snuggles to go around.

Poppy - Houston Pet Photography

When I went to Houston for Labor Day weekend, I was really looking forward to seeing my family and meeting their new puppy! Poppy is a Dachshund/Lab mix and is about 5 months old. She's a pretty brown black color and her fur is shiny soft. She had a rough start with my parents, as soon after she was adopted, she became very ill with distemper. It was a bit touch & go for several days, but Poppy pulled through!

She is a typical, energetic puppy who gets up to mischief if not supervised. But we all love her and know she will be a wonderful dog. Here are some of the photos that I took over the weekend:

Bella Pop Photography Social Shoot

This past weekend, I spent a few hours in Fort Worth with Brandy & Brandon Frank of Bella Pop Photography, as well as several other photographers, for a fun photo shoot. We got to work with a model, the lovely Merry, whom you might remember from this blog as Kitty's human from the Woof and Meow Pet Photo Contest.

I need to improve my people-posing skills, so that when/if I do shoot any portraits, I can help that person rock the camera. I got a lot of ideas and techniques during the Social Shoot, and it was a ton of fun in spite of the sweltering temperatures. We cooled off and had dinner at Central Market's Cafe on the Run. Yum!

Boo - Curtis Park - Dallas Pet Photography

I had a fun morning recently with my mother-in-law, her dog, and my niece. We went to Curtis Park, which is in the suburb of University Park. I got to take photos of Boo as he stomped around the park, chased the ducks, and cooled off under the shady trees. My niece was happy to play with him, as they are two peas in a pod! We went to lunch at Bubba's afterward, which I highly recommend if you love fried chicken. Yum! We had such a great time!

Pete + Chrissy

I thought I would post a different style of my photography for my blog readers to check out!

On June 25th, 2010, my friends Pete & Chrissy got married. :-) My hubby and I have known Pete for a long time. In fact, he was the Best Man in our wedding in 2002! We were so excited when Pete & Chrissy got engaged! I got the privilege to photograph their private, immediate family-only ceremony.

The next day, Pete & Chrissy held a huge party at their home to celebrate, and I also photographed that. Pete's brother took all of the people photographs where as I focused on the details. :-)

I am by no means a wedding photographer. That's a whole different world to pet photography, but it was nice to learn and practice a different photography style.

Chester vs. the Ear Hematoma

Chester, our Great Dane, has a tough time as far as his health goes. He has allergies for which he receives a shot every 10 days. He will usually get a skin infection about once a quarter which has him on antibiotics for a month. The antibiotics kill all the good bacteria as well as the bad, so his ears start to itch, and we give him ear drops for that. We have this medicine routine down after dealing with it for the last five years. Poor dog!

In a recent bout of itchy ears, Chester managed to get a hematoma in his ear flap. It was probably caused by his head shaking or rubbing his ear on the floor or the bars of his crate. (He's too big to scratch his own ears with his back legs, thus the rubbing & shaking.) His ear flap looked like a balloon! We took him to the vet and had it drained with a syringe. It was fine for a few days, but then slowly puffed back up. Our vet had us wait for awhile to see if it would go down with the help of time and corticosteroids, but it didn't, so back we went. His ear was drained and this time the vet put a compression bandage on it. It has to remain bandaged for about two weeks, and then Chester will go back to be evaluated.

He seems okay with the bandage thus far. I, of course, took some photos: Notice the puffy balloon ear in the BEFORE photo.

Hopefully his ear will heal soon!

Poochypalooza 2010 - Khatter Vineyard - Parker, TX

On May 22nd, I went to Khatter Vineryard in Parker, TX to participate in their annual Poochypalooza charity event. This year the Murphy/Parker Animal Shelter was the beneficiary. About 80 people were there listening to live music by local band GT Texas, checking out the silent auction items, and saying hello to some local vendors (myself included!). And wine! Can't forget about the bottles of Khatter wines that were available too!

It was a fun evening and I got to talk to lots of very nice people. Thanks to Carolyn Khatter for putting on such a great event & for letting me set up a last minute table!

Very happy to announce that I will be attending Khatter Vineyard's Poochypalooza event on Saturday, May 22nd, 2010. I'll be there taking some photos and documenting the event!

Poochypalooza is a fundraiser, this year benefiting the Murphy/Parker Animal Shelter. There will be live music, a wheel of prizes, silent auction, a parade of pets who are up for adoption, and more!

I hope the month of May has been a good one so far. It's always a busy one for my family with birthdays and various other things.

My niece, Audrey, turned 2 years old on Saturday and we had a party for her at the park. It was a nice sunny day, although a bit windy. She likes Elmo. A lot! And she loves coloring so there were chalk and crayons to scribble with...and nibble on! ;-)

My own birthday is coming up soon and my cake of choice is red velvet. We always order a cake from Frosted Art here in Dallas. They made our wedding cakes back in 2002! So tell me, what is your favorite flavor of cake?

Hershey - Plano Pet Photography

I was excited about this photo session. My client, Cathy, requested Texas Bluebonnets and I knew the perfect spot! We picked the date and I kept an eye out for the signs of bluebonnets blooming. Turns out the day we picked was perfect! The weather was nice, not too hot, and the flowers looked amazing.

The real star of the show was Miss Hershey. Poor thing, she was tired out from a road trip, but still was a great model. She rocked her bandanas and enjoyed stomping around in the tall grass. We had a lovely afternoon!

Dog Bowl 2010 - Cotton Bowl at Fair Park

This past Sunday was Dog Bowl at the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park. My husband was awesome and set up the majority of my booth. He even stayed to help keep me company.

Dogs and their humans came streaming in at 1pm, and it was a lovely afternoon. Lots of people stopped by my booth to say hello and pick up an information card. I had a raffle with three lucky winners: Linda D. from Red Oak, TX was the big winner of a free photo shoot, Marsha M. from Carrollton, TX won the deluxe goodie basket with a gift certificate good toward a session, and Darla R. from Prosper, TX won the doggie bag, including a gift certificate. Congratulations!

It was fun to meet so many doggies and people!

The little Terrier on the right below is named Jet. He's up for adoption at the Dog & Kitty City Humane Society. Please contact them if you or anyone you know would like to adopt him. My booth was right next to theirs. :-)

Dallas Dog Bowl 2010 - Cotton Bowl - Fair Park

Where will you be on April 11, 2010?

Very excited to announce that I will have a booth at this year's Dog Bowl at the Cotton Bowl, Fair Park. This is an afternoon event where the Cotton Bowl is turned into a huge dog park. It will be a huge playground for dogs and humans alike, with contests and prizes!

Speaking of prizes, I will be doing a raffle at my booth. There will be various gift certificates toward photo sessions and a doggie gift basket. I'll also have some of my work on display for everyone to see. You won't want to miss it!

Neighborly Visit

Yesterday, my husband happened to notice a neighbor's cat walking across our front porch. I opened the door and peeked outside. The cat came running over. As I petted her, I asked my husband to bring my camera out so I could snap a few photos.

She was so sweet! I got to pet her for several minutes before she continued on with her prowling. :-)

Kitty - Euless Pet Photography

I photographed Kitty, the winner of the WOOF and MEOW Pet Photo shoot Contest, last weekend. He was wearing a cute striped sweater when I arrived, so I had to take some photos of him in it. I fell in love with his gorgeous blue eyes. Wow! We got to hang out on the porch for awhile and enjoy a gorgeous sunny afternoon. Kitty was busy playing, posing, meowing, and getting lots of scruffles. We had so much fun!

Ziggy and Jake - Lewisville Pet Photography

I recently went over to Misty & Craig's place in Lewisville to photograph their cats. Meet Ziggy and Jake, the rulers of the household. With them both being black cats, I had to ask, "How do you tell them apart?", but once I got to know them, it was pretty easy.

Ziggy: The fiesty one. She likes to chase the Red Dot (aka laser pointer) and really prefers to be seen but not petted by strange humans!

Jake: The lazy one. He loves his treats and loves being scruffled. He's also extremely content to sleep all day long in His Chair.

Dallas Photog Shootout - Paw Prints Photography

On Friday, I attended the Dallas Photog Shootout for some fun & learning. It was held at The Ryan Manor which was a gorgeous location! We had a great time photographing the different models, decked out in some fab vintage clothes.

I ran into the property owner's dog as I was wandering from one shooting spot to another, and of course I had to take some photos of him. What a cutie!

I stumbled across a really cool website that sells t-shirts with just about any subject matter you can think of. It lets you create and customize, which makes each item uniquely your own.

I was loving all of the dog t-shirts. As a Great Dane owner, I laughed myself silly over a t-shirt that read: Great Danes Rule. Other Dogs Drool. Actually Great Danes drool more, but that's beside the point.

And on the cat side, I found one that read: Obey the Kitty!

I love that you can put your chosen design on any style and color of t-shirt that you want. Go customize and have fun!

Pawcurious Vet Blog

My friend Jessica, better known as Dr. V., writes a fantastic blog over at Pawcurious.com. She has been a veterinarian since 2002, and along with that comes some of the funniest, saddest, sweetest, and "oh no they didn't!" posts I have ever read. Anyone who is an animal lover should go read her blog. It is filled with all kinds of cool stuff.

Right now, Jessica is setting up the Hounds For Haiti auction that opens tomorrow. There will be various great items up for auction with all of the proceeds going to Red Cross. Be sure to check it out!

Spree - Dallas Cat Photography

It's no lie, I love my cat to pieces even though he can be a real brat sometimes. I love that Spree greets me with a meow whenever he sees me (or maybe he's just asking for food!) He insists on being our chaperone at night and sleeps right in between my husband and I. He isn't a lap cat, but instead prefers to sit next to me or somewhere in my vicinity. He also loves his food bowl and will remind me of this fact every time I walk into our laundry room.

But mostly, he is Spree. A kick in the mouth!

Ruby - Houston Dog Photography

We spent Christmas in Houston this year. My parents were pet-sitting Ruby as her humans were on vacation for three weeks. She is very calm, affectionate, and a gorgeous golden color.

I got a new lens from Santa for Christmas so of course I had to try it out as well!

My deepest sympathies go to the W's in Kentucky on the loss of their beloved Snuggles.

It was a treat to photograph such a sweetie and Lady Snuggles will be missed.

Snuggles

During my visit to Kentucky, I had the privilege of meeting and photographing Snuggles. She is a sweet girl and has quite a bit of pep in her step for a doggie who isn't feeling one hundred percent. She was a bit shy at first, but we were able to coax some smiles out of her courtesy of her human, Steve, and her friend, Karri.

I love this one. Dogs always seem to lick their noses after a yawn!

Snuggles is the first pet I've photographed that I didn't know prior to our session. Once she figured out that my camera wasn't anything to be scared off, we had a fun time. I am glad I got to capture a few of her smiles!

Cookie

I recently went to Lexington, Kentucky to visit my friend Karri. While I was there, I shot a mini-session of her gorgeous Rottweiler, Cookie.

I happened to be eating breakfast when Cookie came to sit next to me. I think she was interested in the peanut butter sandwich I had in my hand!

Simba and Bunz - Houston Cat Photography

During Labor Day weekend, I went down to Houston to visit my parents and sister. Laura was kind enough to let me photograph her cats so I could work on my skills. The stormy weather prevented us from getting too many shots that first night, but later on in the weekend I was able to take some more.

This is Bunz, Laura's boyfriend's cat.

Spree and Chester

Any photographer who wishes to practice their craft invariably winds up shooting their pets. Mine are no exception!

Spree the cat was surprisingly more cooperative than Chester the dog. Spree is easily motivated with treats.

This was a lucky shot of Chester. I had my camera focused on him, but moved my face away from it and talked to him. He finally looked over and I quickly managed to grab the shot without looking through the viewfinder.

Hello! I'm Luci. I am the person behind the lens for Paw Prints Photography. I've always loved taking photos, ever since I was a kid playing with my first Fisher Price camera (pre digital!). I also love animals. I have a Great Dane and a cat, but they will tell you that they really own me! ;-)

I enjoy acting & take weekly classes for it. Who knows...maybe some day my name will be up in lights. I'm not really cut out for a stereotypical office job. Been there, done that. Regardless, I just want to do something that makes me happy. Acting and photography do just that.

I have a supportive husband who puts up with my many whims. I love that he has faith in me to try my hand at pet photography.
